Wednesday, February 20, 18:30   Black History Month: Probing Contemporary Impacts of America’s Legacy of Slavery

(Why Black People Act the Way They Do)的视频讲座中,她介绍了大西洋奴隶贸易的诞生背景,并详细列举了延续至今的种族主义和各种种族歧视行为,研究非裔美国人传承了几代人的行为表现,尽管这些行为方式往往被过度简化为“黑人文化”。

On February 20, 2019, the Shanghai American Center invites you to an eye-opening deep dive and meaningful consideration on the residual impacts of generations of chattel slavery in the United States of America. During this event, we will screen a video lecture by Dr. Joy DeGruy, a nationally and internationally renowned researcher, educator, presenter and author of the book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome. As she discusses in Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, from the 16th century, the beginning of African enslavement in the Americas until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment and emancipation in 1865, Africans were hunted like animals, captured, sold, tortured, and raped. They experienced the worst kind of physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual abuse. Given such history, isn't it likely that many of the enslaved were severely traumatized? And did the trauma and the effects of such horrific abuse end with the abolition of slavery? How can we better understand the enduring legacy of injury and healing with which black communities and individuals must contend? In Dr. DeGruy’s video lecture titled, “Why Black People Act the Way They Do,” she presents the conditions that led to the Atlantic slave trade and details the pursuant racism and efforts at repression that continue through present day. Dr. DeGruy looks at adaptive behaviors of black Americans that have been passed down through generations and that form part of what is often oversimplified as black culture.

Wednesday, February 27, 18:30   Black History Month: The Great Debaters and Education Opportunities of America’s HBCU’s

On February 27, 2019, the Shanghai American Center invites you to commemorate Black History Month with a screening of the film, “The Great Debaters.” Based on a true story, the film highlights the extraordinary talent and determination of black college debate students to excel in the 1930s Jim Crow, segregated South. The team’s coach, poet Melvin B. Tolson, leads them to become some of the best debaters in the nation who compete with national debate champions from Harvard University. Rachel Washington, who is a U.S. Diplomat and proud graduate of one of America’s Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU), will introduce the film and lead the audience discussion, including education opportunities for Chinese students to study at America’s HBCU’s. Over the course of her 10-year career with the U.S. Department of State, Rachel has served two tours in China (Guangzhou and Shanghai).  She also worked in Washington D.C. where she assisted U.S. citizens in West and southern Africa and volunteered on task forces to locate American citizens following international crises, such as Japan’s 2011 earthquake-tsunami.  Rachel’s love for Chinese history and culture began in 2001, when she studied in Kunming.  She later returned to China to teach English in Xi’an, all prior to joining the Foreign Service.  Rachel earned her Bachelor’s from the HBCU LeMoyne-Owen College, in Memphis, TN.  She also holds a Master’s in International Relations from American University. “The Great Debaters” is suitable viewing for all ages and imparts that educating future generations is one critical element in the fight to eradicate racism. The movie is 126 minutes long and is in English with English subtitles.
