Monday, March 4, 18:30 Advancing Gender Equality and Women’s EconomicEmpowerment Around the World: A Panel Discussion with Female Diplomats Servingin Shanghai

Tuesday, March 5, 18:30 Whydo Americans value liberty, equality, and justice? A deep dive into colonialAmerica and the events that led to the American Revolution.
On Tuesday March 5th, Public Diplomacy AssistantOmair M. Mirza will launch a monthly series in the Shanghai American Center,Contemporary Topics in U.S. Government. Join us as Omair introduces theAmerican values of liberty, equality, and justice, and discusses how—and to what extent—colonial Americanexperiences reflected these values. Understanding America today requires aconsideration of some important historical events and processes, including:14th and 15th century Europe and the lives of everyday people; what factors promptedsome Europeans to immigrate to (what would become) the United States ofAmerica; relations and tensions between Britain and American colonies; theAmerican Revolution; and the Declaration of Independence. The history and rootsof the American experiment--though marked by uneven progress, seismicstruggles, and violent conflicts—continue to bear fruitand propel forward an America that welcomes immigrants, strives for equalityand inclusion, and a just and equitable society. Previously, Omair worked forseveral years on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC as a Legislative Assistant to aU.S. Congressman.
