President Richard Nixon spent eight days in China in February 1972, during which he met Chairman Mao Zedong and signed the Shanghai Communiqué with Premier Zhou Enlai. Nixon’s trip was a watershed moment in U.S.-China relations, a step towards the normalization of political relations and economic interaction. Nixon dubbed his visit “the week that changed the world.”
