日程 Schedule (subject to change)

9:00-9:15: Opening Remarks

9:15-10:30: Beyond Dialogues: Role Plays and Scenario-based Learning –Shushan Richardson

Authentic texts are recognized as valuable and much focus is being given to their usage in English language reading classes. The same focus should be given to authentic speaking activities. Dialogues can often seem unnatural and simply memorizing a dialogue does not necessary improve communication skills. Dialogues and structured variations of dialogues give an important framework for communication, but speaking classes must go beyond these techniques to more authentic speech and speaking situations for students. This workshop will focus on ways to make textbook dialogues more communicative and ways to incorporate role-plays and scenario based learning in an English speaking class.

10:45-12:00: Integrating Formative Assessment Strategies in the EFL Classroom -Allison Grant

Informal assessments are a necessary and useful part of every curriculum, and language learners need constant feedback on their progress in order to continue to make gains toward their language goals. In large classes, it can sometimes be difficult to provide this feedback to every student on a daily basis. This workshop will present strategies to quickly and efficiently gather informal feedback on student progress that accommodates larger class sizes.

12:00-13:30 Lunch Break

13:30-14:45: Speaking Assessment in Large Classrooms –Shushan Richardson

As language teachers, we want to encourage our students to communicate effectively, but how can we give meaningful feedback to each person when we have so many students and such limited time? In this workshop, teachers will be given techniques to manage and assess speaking activities in large class settings. Using both formative and summative assessments on a regular basis, teachers and students will have a better understanding of each student’s speaking strengths, progress, and areas that need continued development.

15:00-16:15 Practicing Speaking Fluency with “Speed Friending” Activity -Allison Grant

Speaking can be difficult to incorporate into the EFL classroom, but “speed friending” is an easy activity that requires very little prep time. Much like speed dating, the students rotate around the classroom and speak for two minutes to a different partner each round. A quick demo session will briefly show teachers another great resources that they can add to their teaching tool belt and pull out any time they need students to practice their informal speaking and listening skills.

16:15-16:30 Closing Remarks
