Dear Students

First, many thanks to those of you who were involved in this morning's event - your orderly evacuation, your cooperation with UTS staff and authorities, and your patience is much appreciated.

I am now in a position to provide you with a comprehensive report of this morning's event.

It was noticed this morning that two of the seven vials of picric acid stored on site (Building 1, Level 2) had begun to crystalise - in this form, the acid has the potential to explode if subject to shock or friction, fire or other sources of ignition. In line with the University's Environment, Health and Safety procedures, the situation was assessed and though an explosion was determined to be unlikely, emergency services were contacted and buildings 1, 2, 3 and 4 were evacuated as a precaution.

NSW Police Service (including the Bomb Squad) and NSW Fire & Rescue Service were very quick to respond and arrived at the scene in minutes. Authorities and UTS Security worked together to control the situation, with NSW Police closing Broadway as a precaution.

Unfortunately, the media was also very quick to respond with stories (many inaccurate) appearing online and news crews on site.

I am pleased to report that the threat was quickly neutralised - in only 90 minutes, the buildings were evacuated, emergency services arrived, closed Broadway and neutralised the threat, and the all-clear was given and we returned to business as usual. The speed with which events unfolded made on-the-fly communications a challenge so again, thank you for your cooperation and your patience.

Regards

Ross
