Chestnut 1: (Transition to sound in film)

Yet this most fundamental standard of historicalperiodization conceals a host of paradoxes. Nearly every movie theater, however modest, had apiano or organ to provide musical accompaniment to silent pictures. In manyinstances, spectators in the era before recorded sound experienced elaborateaural presentations alongside movies' visual images, from the Japanese benshi (narrators) craftingmultivoiced dialogue narratives to original musical compositions performed by symphony-size orchestras in Europe and theUnited States. In Berlin, forthe premiere performance outside the Soviet Union of The Battleship Potemkin, film director Sergei Eisenstein worked with Austrian composer Edmund Meisel(1874-1930) on a musical score matching sound to image; the Berlin screenings with livemusic helped to bring the film its wide international fame.

Paragraph 2 suggestswhich of the following about Eisenstein’s film The Battleship Potemkirf?

○Thefilm was not accompanied by sound before its Berlin screening.

○Thefilm was unpopular in the Soviet Union before it was screened in Berlin.

○Eisenstein’sfilm was the first instance of collaboration between a director and a composer.

○Eisensteinbelieved that the musical score in a film was as important as dialogue.

Chestnut 2:(Animals and plants in desert)

Seasonal migration is another form of escape, especiallyfor large mammals or birds. The term retreat is applied to the short-termescape behavior of desert animals, and it usually assumes the pattern of adaily rhythm. Birds shelter in nests, rock overhangs, trees, and dense shrubsto avoid the hottest hours of the day, while mammals like the kangaroo ratburrow underground.

Itcan be inferred from paragraph 6 that all of the places desert animals retreatto (A)

○ provide shade from the sun

○ sometimes become crowded

○ are places where supplies of food are plentiful

○ leave the animals vulnerable to predators
