今天我来讲最近几次sat考试出现的填空单词

1. perpetuate 使永久存在

perpetual 永久的

permanent 永久的

我记单词的最重要的原则是找有头韵或者尾韵的同反义词

要记住perpetuate，必须要很熟悉 permanent 这个常用词

记这三个词的顺序应该是先permanent，然后perpetual，最后perpetuate

一定要配合一个自己最喜欢的例句

我很喜欢perpetuate这句话

When you finally see the magnificent curtain of water, remember to think of a wish, but only one, and make a few hundred photos to perpetuate this moment forever.

这里的curtain of water指的是尼亚加拉大瀑布。作者建议游客见到瀑布的时候许一个愿，并且多照相，留住这壮观的瞬间perpetuate this moment。

2. castigate 谴责，惩罚

chastise 谴责，惩罚

这两个词意思一模一样，词典查chastise，词源指向castigate

这组单词给我很大启发，因为它们说明了ch和c在意义上是没有区别的

我马上联想到了vocal cords声带，还有一种拼写是vocal chords

下面这段话是一位毒舌主持人写的

The Gargoyle in North Korea is apparently preparing to launch new missiles. What new stern language will the UN come up with this time to castigate Kim Jong Il? Aren't you glad that you aren't Barack Obama right now?

看完第一句，应该猜到这个人要黑哪个家族，知道gargoyle这个单词的同学，估计已经感觉到了作者的幽默。这个词指的是屋檐上那些怪物形状的排水雕像。

我的译文: 朝鲜那个小丑明摆着又要发射导弹了。联合国这次用什么狠话来谴责金正日？你现在是不是很庆幸你不是奥巴马？

3. magnanimous 大方的

magnate 大亨，巨头

magnum opus 大作，巨著

这三个词开头相同，都有大的意思。

在比赛中输了，大方承认自己技不如人，这就是magnanimous。

Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola was magnanimous in defeat after Internazionale ended their dream of becoming the first club to successfully defend the Champions League.

巴塞罗那和国际米兰的球迷应该记得2010年的欧冠，国际米兰在半决赛中击败了卫冕冠军巴塞罗那。赛后，媒体把矛头指向国米的防守反击战术和被吹掉的争议球，可是巴萨主帅瓜迪奥拉却大方地承认了失败。

4 duplicity 欺骗

duplicate 复制

复制跟欺骗是什么关系？我们来看 fabricate 的两个意思: 制造和编造。

复制出相同的东西，可能就是为了欺骗。

Penny Junor是一位英国作家，她的书Charles: victim or villain里面提到

It was Diana's duplicity, not Charles's affair, which caused the marriage to disintegrate.

她认为戴安娜王妃跟保镖 Barry Mannakee 的affair，才是导致这段婚姻失败的原因，所以她觉得Charles是victim，不是villain。

不管谁对谁错，他们的婚姻确实存在duplicity。

5 vanquish 打败，征服

quell 压制

quench 浇灭

这三个词都有qu-，所以我的理解是make something quiet down

同义词conquer也是有qu-

看到vanquish，我想到拿破仑

It was incumbent on Alexander to vanquish Napoleon, under pain of forfeiting his crown and his life. His long refusal to break with France had excited distrust in all classes of his subjects, and rendered him unpopular. 

亚历山大必须打败拿破仑，否则皇位和性命都不保。他一直不肯与法国决裂，这使得他失去了所有臣民的信任，成了不受欢迎的君主。
