Master of Science (M.S.) requirements

# Students select a Special Committee composed of one professor representing the major field and at least one professor representing a minor field.

#The student's Special Committee determines coursework and credits for the M.S. degree.

# Committee members advise students in the selection and conduct of research problems for the thesis.

# Candidates must submit an acceptable hypothesis-driven thesis based on a research project and pass a final oral exam.

# Teaching experience is required and can be satisfied by assisting a faculty member in teaching a course.

# Fulfill a minimum of 2 registration units (two semesters). Candidates are expected to complete degree requirements in two years, but have up to 4 years to complete requirements.

Evaluation of an applicant for admission to Columbia Law School includes a determination of the candidate’s intellectual and academic qualifications, aptitude for legal study as measured by the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and assessment of whether or not the candidate has demonstrated personal qualities considered requisite to scholastic success, professional distinction, and public service. In addition, the Admissions Committee examines the applicant’s personal essay or statement and letters of recommendation, as well as the course selection, special honors and awards, fellowship opportunities, publications, extracurricular involvement, community service, political activity, professional contributions, and other work experience.

In recent years, approximately 6,000 applicants have applied for nearly 365 spaces in each year’s entering class.

# Composition applicants: three scores of instrumental works with recorded examples of the works being performed is preferred. (Such evidence may include, but should not be exclusively, electroacoustic works or installation documentation; at least one of the submitted works must be a score involving traditional instrumental writing.) A repertory list of works (solo and chamber) performed or composed during the past few years and a sample of printed concert programs in which you have participated, either as performer, composer, or collaborator. A minimum of two papers illustrating writing ability in any of the following areas: musical analysis, criticism, aesthetics, music theory, or music technology. Please include your most recent works as well as 20th century pieces, when possible.

# PDF files of your scores can be uploaded on the Music Department's admissionssite. If the scores are larger than 10MB, you can create a website and provide link on application or you may mail them to:
