Air pollution can harm health through causing free radical damage to cells within the body when air pollutants are absorbed through the lungs.  Free radicals are chemicals that can travel through the body and cause great amounts of damage to healthy cells.  Free radicals are generated by ultraviolet rays, tobacco smoke, and air pollution. The body constantly tries to counteract these free radicals with protective ones  which are known as antioxidants.  Antioxidants are obtained through diet, supplements or the body can actually make some themselves such as glutathione.  However, If not enough anti-oxidants are available to counteract the free radicals then damage and stress can occur to the cells in the body which can affect overall health and immunity long-term.

Antioxidants are able to neutralize free radicals as they help to stop a chain reaction which over long-term can contribute to causing many degenerative diseases as well as accelerating the aging process.  Therefore antioxidants are recommended to help minimize these processes.  Some of the most potent antioxidants are:-

Vitamin C – not only is Vitamin C important for a healthy immune system it is also a potent antioxidant and has a wide range of health benefits. As an antioxidant, vitamin C can help protect the cells from free radical damage particularly from smoking, infection, and pollution.  Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin which means your body cannot store it so is really important to get it daily in your diet.
