日程 Schedule (subject to change)

9:00-9:15: Opening Remarks

9:15-10:30: Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) – Rachel Parker

This workshop is an introduction to the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach. CLT activities will be presented for teachers to use in their classrooms for students to produce the target language appropriately and efficiently in the classroom and beyond. Workshop attendees will also be encouraged to come up with their own ideas of CLT activities.

10:45-12:00: Using Speaking Activities to Wrap Up Lessons – Malia Mullen

It is most common to end a unit or lesson with a writing assignment or test, but if designed strategically, a project with a speaking component can often achieve the same results while also encouraging students to use the language they have been learning. This workshop will focus on different ways of using speaking activities to conclude a unit or topic lesson. Ideas and activities will be discussed, and teachers will brainstorm different activities and evaluate the merits of each. Additionally, teachers will have the time to create lessons based on these strategies that they can use in their individual classrooms.

12:00-13:30 Lunch Break

13:30-14:45 Fostering Critical Thinking Skills – Rachel Parker

This workshop will present the importance of critical thinking skills which help students develop their ideas, organize them and use the target language effectively and appropriately in the target language. Workshop attendees will be encouraged to participate in Critical Thinking Activities.

15:00-16:15 Let's Discuss!: Teaching small and large group discussion – Malia Mullen

We often see discussion as one of the core competencies or expectations of a class, but students will struggle with carrying a conversation or developing healthy debate because they have never learned the fundamentals of holding a formal discussion. This workshop will discuss how to teach the basic framework of holding and facilitating classroom discussion, focusing on the basic mechanics of discussion and debate. Teachers will have an opportunity to develop ideas specific to their classrooms and will engage in discussion and debate themselves, while recording their observations, to utilize the data when working to implement discussion training in the classroom.

16:15-16:30:  Closing Remarks
