AN HISTORIC mansion with a private island famed for lavish parties attended by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Barbra Streisand has gone on sale for a whopping $14 million.

The romantic six-bed colonial centrepiece on Tavern Island in Connecticut comes with three additional buildings and a 75ft pool overlooking a secluded beach.

As well as the main residence the 14,163 square meter plot holds a caretaker’s cottage, a teahouse and a boathouse for guests.

Located an hour off the coast of New York City, the property also includes a mainland garage and dock, both of which can accommodate several vessels.

Once owned by theatre legend Billy Rose it is the first time the plot has been on sale for 30 years.

It boasts charming views of nearby Rowaytona, Connecticut, and on a clear night the dramatic skyline of New York City can also be seen.

The plot of land was first inhabited by European settlers in 1651 and later become famed for troublesome celebrations by sailors making their hazardous trip across the Atlantic Ocean.

In the 1960s the island played host to Hollywood soirees, where owner Billy Rose’s invitation included silver screen icons Monroe and Streisand.

Broker Richard Higgins said: “It’s the most romantic and unique property with a view of New York City from the posh state of Connecticut.”
