LONGING to escape the daily grind and recharge the batteries, but lacking inspiration?
Some of the most incredible natural sites on the planet are right on our doorstep, you just need to know where to look.
So from swimming with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef, to soaking up the sun at the hidden gem of Little Beach, these are the best Australian holidays of 2015.
• Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
One of the nation’s most iconic wilderness experiences, Cradle Mountain is home to some spectacular walking tracks. You’ll pass through ancient rainforests, glacial lakes and rugged mountains. And watch the wombats roam by ...
• Little Beach, Western Australia
Albany, a town tucked away on the southern coast of Western Australia, is home to some jawdropping hidden gems. The best is Little Beach with its pristine, powdery white sand, spectacular blue hues of the water, and dramatic rock formations.
Then there’s the nearby Elephant Rocks of Denmark, a rather dramatic sight.
• Lord Howe Island
It’s known as “The Last Paradise”, so it’s not surprising that Lord Howe Island scored the title of Australia’s best island in a TripAdvisor list last month.
Surrounded by spectacular turquoise water, it’s just 11 kilometres long at its widest, has 250 residents and only allows 400 tourists at a time. This allows it to remain fairly pristine. There are decent food offerings, stunning reefs, and a shock to some; no mobile phone service.
• Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory
With its relatively untouched wilderness including waterfalls and gorges, along with an incredible history and culture, this is a place you need to see in your lifetime. The rock art is mind-blowing, bringing many ancient stories to life.
• Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
You can swim with the majestic whale sharks at Ningaloo, one of the world’s largest fringing reefs at a whopping 260 kilometres long. Dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and whales also frequent the World Heritage site.
• Town 1770, Queensland
The strangely named and tiny town is surrounded on three sides by the Coral Sea and Bustard Bay, it was the second landing site of James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour in May 1770.
• Hamilton Island, Queensland
One of the world’s best hotels — Qualia — is nestled on this island. When you come here, think tranquillity, nature and luxury.
Even better, Hamilton Island is so close to some of Australia’s most incredible natural sites, so you can hop on a helicopter and visit the world famous Heart Reef.
Then pop over to Whitehaven beach for a picnic. Ah, bliss.
