- To provide subject matter expertise and act as the leader for all disputes, regulatory matters and internal investigations in the UK, Europe and Asia for all RBC businesses (Captial Markets and Investor and Treasury services, but not RBC International Wealth Management)
- To direct the defence and settlement of all litigation in the UK, Europe and Asia to ensure alignment with the priorities and risk appetites of the affected RBC businesses (other than RBC International Wealth Management)
- To oversee the selection and management of external counsel supporting dispute and investigation matters in the UK, Europe and Asia and to ensure cost effective and efficient delivery of legal services in respect of disputes, regulatory matters and internal investigations in these geographies
- To act in partnership with Compliance, Employee Relations, Corporate Investigation Services and other General Counsel Group members
- To proactively identify issues and reduce the potential impact of them on RBC’s reputations and businesses
- To support the Assistant General Counsel, U.S. & International Litigation in the achievement of enterprise and RBC General Counsel Group strategic priorities in regard to all actual or potential litigation, regulatory or enforcement matters on a forward-looking and proactive basis
- Provide strategic direction, support and legal advice to Senior Business and Functional Leaders in relation to all disputes, regulatory matters and internal investigations in the UK, Europe and Asia for all RBC businesses (other than RBC International Wealth Management) (the “relevant RBC businesses”) with a view to maximizing preferred outcomes and ensuring a consistent approach to the management of legal and reputational risk and with a view to managing the associated legal spend
- Reporting to various board and senior operating committees, including the Board of RBC EL and the Operating Committee of I&TS, on the progress and outcome of disputes, identify trends, communicate lessons learned and take proactive steps to minimize exposure and prevent disputes
- Provide strategic oversight, specialized knowledge and legal advice in relation to the conduct of internal investigations, in conjunction with other internal partners including Compliance, Operational Risk Corporate Investigation Services, Internal Audit Services, Human Resources and Employee Relations and directly leading all privileged investigations in relation to the relevant RBC businesses
- Act as the primary General Counsel Group contact for the relevant RBC businesses
- Partner with others in the General Counsel Group and, specifically, the Assistant General Counsel, U.S. & International Litigation, to ensure a consistent approach to legal risk management across the UK, Europe and Asia
- Oversee the selection and management of external counsel in relation to all disputes and investigations in the relevant RBC businesses, including
- Being the key driver of cost effective and consistent delivery of legal services in the relevant RBC businesses in regard to all disputes and investigations
- Obtain, track and enforce budgets from external counsel, e-discovery providers, experts and other services providers in regard to disputes and investigations in the relevant RBC businesses, and explore alternative billing opportunities
- Partner with others in the General Counsel Group and, specifically, Senior Counsel supporting disputes and investigations related to RBC International Wealth Management, to ensure a consistent approach to counsel and optimum cost management for RBC
- Manage and provide advice on legal risk (including litigation and regulatory enforcement matters) and reputational risk arising out of complaints and lawsuits and the conduct of employees
- Provide advice on the application and legality of policies for addressing legal, regulatory and reputational risks as they relate to operational procedures
- Provide analysis and market insight on matters affecting the relevant RBC businesses to assist the relevant RBC businesses to enhance their practices and procedures to meet and exceed requirements
- Undergraduate and Law (J.D. or LLB) degrees preferably in both common and civil law
- Extensive experience practicing law in a subject area closely aligned with financial services and preferably in both civil and common law jurisdictions
- Direct experience conducting internal investigations in the criminal and civil setting and regulatory examinations context
- Direct experience managing complex litigations and responding to enforcement or prosecutorial inquiries
- Proven understanding of financial accounting requirements related to provisions
- Expertise in the legal and regulatory environment impacting the relevant RBC businesses
- Deep understanding of the relevant RBC businesses and their operations, including the market environment affecting the relevant RBC businesses
- A clear understanding of the legal risk and reputational risk appetite of the relevant RBC businesses
- Enterprise mindset
- Ability to understand global issues and operate in a world-wide business
- Ability to communicate effectively in several language, with a requirement for English and a preference for French, German, Korean and Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin)
