With globalisation allowing more and more people to travel overseas, it is arguable that there are both positive and negative aspects for both tourists and the countries that they visit. In my opinion, there are more advantages than disadvantages.

One main drawback of increasing international travel is the damage of natural landscapes at holiday destinations, which has also resulted in higher expenses imposed on tourists to visit these areas. The effect of more tourism at popular destinations has created a harmful cycle that affect both travellers and the countries they explore. For instance, Sipadan Island in East Malaysia was once touted as one of the top reefs by avid overseas scuba divers, but the damage on the reef from litter was so extensive that the tourism board tripled the price of accommodation for overseas visitors to control the issue. These outcomes are hence the disadvantages of International travel.

On the other hand, a significant advantage of international travel is that it benefits the economy in the countries that tourists visit.  A thriving tourism industry increases the demand for services like hotels, transport and entertainment which creates thousands of jobs and generates billions of dollars from tourism alone in many countries. Tourism in Bali, for instance, is one of the largest industry in terms of income and as a result, it has been estimated that 80% of its economy was tourism-related. Overseas travel is thus advantageous for destination countries due to economic gain.

Additionally, explorations of different countries can also allow overseas travellers to gain more insight into other cultures. Through sight-seeing of historic sights and eating local food, travellers themselves are able to expand their horizons. For example, a visitor to Tokyo is able to learn more of its ancient history by visiting the many shrines peppered around the city, as well as indulge in local food delicacies to understand Japanese culture in more depth. International travel thus also benefits tourists individually.

In conclusion, I believe from the points above that whilst travelling internationally can harm natural landscapes and make destinations more expensive for tourists, tourism allows economies to thrive at destination countries and benefits travellers’ cultural knowledge. Hence the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
