Hiroyuki, who started diving when he was aged 18, originally found the fish on the brink of death and took it upon himself to feed her five crabs a day for ten days until she built up strength. He  thinks Yoriko has a very human-like face from a certain angle and he's sure she knows it's him.

A wonderful story, and I believe that there are some fish and other creatures who have facial recognition abilities. I hand fed a swan some torn pieces of fresh lettuce at Hotel Bel-Air's pond years ago. When I returned to the hotel and pond six months later, the swan detached itself from the other two in the pond that it had been gathering with, and came up to me immediately. Same thing happened a year after that.
