Some people say that communication by using computers and phones will have side effects on young people's writing and reading skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Modern technology has greatly impacted the way people communicate with each other, opening up communication capabilities never thought possible before. However, some have argued that modern technology has affected younger generations’ reading and writing skills. I completely agree, but with different outcomes, as I believe reliance on computers has negatively affected writing capabilities, while modern communication technology has actually improved people’s reading skills.

Regarding the ability to write, computers have made writing easier, which has caused youth to rely on them. Spelling, vocabulary and grammar are essential to the ability to write, as sentences need to be constructed correctly, and words need to be chosen and conveyed with accuracy. However, modern word processing software has diminished the need for such writing capabilities, as tools can be used to correct any errors with spelling and grammar. Personally, I can remember writing an email to my boss, unaware that the ‘spell check’ feature was off, and only later realised the email was riddled with spelling mistakes.

Conversely, it can be argued that reading capabilities have improved with people reading at a higher frequency. Computers and phones, when combined with mobile data and Internet capabilities, allow people to access emails, text or instant messages, blogs and chat forums from anywhere. While people used to rely on telephone conversations and face-to-face meetings to exchange information, modern technology has allowed people to receive and process information quickly. As such, people now read more than ever, evidenced by popular beliefs amongst young people that it is easier to have a conversation through text messages than it is to have one over the phone.

In conclusion, while modern communication is often viewed by the benefits it provides, there can be some side effects, some of which can be positive, like the ability to read more, and some negative, like a reliance on technology for spelling and grammar.
