首次出现专有名词并且没有代词 it, they, this, that,these, those等等。
A: The apparent paradox isresolved by requiring that the traveller crossing the date line changes hisdate, thus bringing the travellers into agreement when they meet.
B: For example, if an airplanewere to travel westward with the sun, 24hr would elapse as it circled theglobe, but it would still be the same day for those in the airplane while itwould be one day later for those on the ground below them.
C: International date line, imaginary line on the earth's surface, generally following the 180° meridian oflongitude, where, by international agreement, travellers change date.
D: The same problem would arise iftwo travellers journeyed in opposite directions to a point on the opposite sideof the earth, 180° of longitude distant.
E: Thedate line is necessary to avoid a confusion that would otherwise result.
D中the same question和B的confusion关系紧密,所以D是第四句。
A: Yet, for every glamorous research project, there are several others that are less high-profile and canbe legitimately accused of being one long and boring.
B: Stem cell research, cloning,DNA research, planetary exploration, new energy sources-these are theheadline-making projects that receive the greatest attention, turning some ofthe scientists into near celebrities.
C: But there is a perversefascination with such projects and their researchers, who are driven on bytheir desire to change the world.
D: Watching grass grow, analysingditch water, measuring the growth of human fingernails, or indeed watchingpaint dry may not rank high in the glamour stakes.
E: All scientists, however, aim tomake an improvement to the world through their work.
最后C又一次提出转折科学家依然希望改变世界desire to change the world与前文make animprovement to the world意思一致。
