Art, Education and the Environment: Perspectives from a Creative Entrepreneur

6:30 – July 26th, Thursday, 6:30pm

Heidi Schwegler is an American artist whose work emanates from the discarded waste of Beijing, Los Angeles, New York City and suburban America. She roams these cities for things that most would consider trash: chicken bones, broken signs, lost shoes, take out containers. She then resynthesizes these objects by casting them with glass, gold, silver, wax, resulting in artwork that persists in a sort of “living death.” Professionally, Schwegler’s aspirations have always resided in blending a career that includes a studio practice as an artist and teaching as a college level educator. Please join us at the Beijing American Center for a chance to meet Schwegler and learn more about her and her artwork. During the presentation she will share the three main facets of her career: her sculptural work, the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) graduate program she is currently chairing, and a new artist residency program she is developing that will be based in southern California. She will also discuss why, after nearly twenty years in academia, she has decided to step away from teaching in order to more fully embrace her studio practice and her new role as creative entrepreneur.

This program will be conducted in English with simultaneous translation into Chinese.
