My Favorite Cityscapes/Landscapes

1) I live in New Orleans so I’m almost required to submit something about Mardi Gras,* right? The holiday is marked by parades that roll past huge historic homes along one of the city’s grandest streets each night for more than a week before Fat Tuesday. Here’s a photo of the scene walking up to the parade route as float riders toss beads and trinkets to the crowd. Even blocks away, you can hear the percussion from the marching bands rumble like thunder in the night air.
2.) Tulane University. I work in the grey stone building pictured here surrounded by tall oak trees. It’s particularly beautiful and ghostly on foggy mornings like this.
3.) There’s a park along the Mississippi River called Crescent Park that was recently designed out of abandoned wharves and railroad lines. The building pictured faces the river and the newly refurbished structures like something out of an Edward Hopper painting. I’m not sure if the writing is graffiti or intentional, but it resonates either way.
4.) New Orleans has the oldest continuously operating streetcar lines in the United States. The screech and hum of streetcars rumbling by outside my window at work is one of my favorite sounds.
5.) This isn’t in New Orleans, but it’s a beach we often visit in Florida along the Gulf Coast. They call it the “emerald coast” because the clear water has a jewel-like shimmer from the plant life below. On a clear day like this, it’s typical to see pods of dolphins jumping out of the water in the distance.
