Last-minute study tips

Rushing toget as much study done as possible before your exams start? Don’t panic – thereare a few ways that you can use your study time wisely to get the most out of yourcram sessions!

Ask yourself questions

Just readinginformation over and over isn’t the best way to commit it to memory. It’s muchmore effective to test yourself by using the information to ask questions. Soask yourself questions while you go about your daily routine, and challengeyourself to answer questions while you’re in the shower or while you brush yourteeth. If you work better by collaborating, write down a list of questions andget your friends or family to spontaneously ask you at different times of theday, just like a spot quiz.

Cut the connection

Disconnectfrom the web to avoid temptation to wander off to your favourite websites orinstant messaging. You’ll be able to revise so much more if you optimise yourtime by cutting out distractions. That viral YouTube video will be waiting foryou after the exam, and you’ll enjoy chatting to your friends so much more whenyou can talk about how relieved you are to be finished, rather than how nervousyou are about getting ready for your exams!

Make up rhymes and acronyms

Find creative ways to remember the informationyou need in your exams. If there’s an equation process, or a list that you needto remember, make up a mnemonic - a sentence using the first letter of eachword. For example, the tried and true method for remembering the order of theplanets in our solar system: “My very elegant mother just served us noodles”represents “Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune”.Perhaps you can think of a rhyme to help you remember certain words or phrases,or you might be able to shorten information to an acronym. Maybe you can evencome up with a diagram to help you remember the order of your information.

Make a ‘cheat sheet’

Create a pagefull of ideas, quotes, and equations that you need to remember for a certainexam, and carry it around with you in the days or weeks leading up to yourexam. That way you’ll have the most relevant and important information that youneed to learn, with you at all times. You’ll be able to sneak in a quickrevision session any time you have a few spare minutes. Try colour coding thecheat sheet, or breaking the page down into different sections, to make it morememorable.

Say it out loud

It might helpyou to remember something more if you say it out loud. Instead of readingsilently, don’t be afraid to make some noise, and recite your study notes toyourself. To make the information even more memorable, say it (or sing it)aloud to the tune of your favourite song. If you get stuck in your exam, try toremember how the words you are looking for fit to the tune of the music.

Take breaks

You might betempted to stay up all night before an exam to maximise your study time. But itis important to take breaks, to allow yourself to rest. You won’t be doing yourselfany favours by heading into the exam room tired! So make sure to allocateproper meal times and recreational times to give yourself a break from thebooks. Allow yourself to watch an episode of your favourite TV show, or to fitsome exercise into your day, to give your brain a break and to reward yourselffor all of your hard work so far. And most importantly, get a good night’ssleep!

Relax

Try to keepeverything in perspective. Sometimes the anticipation of an exam can be scarierthan the event itself. You’ve worked hard all semester, and this is a chance toshow off everything you’ve learned. While it can be hard at times to keep yournerves away, try your best to relax and focus on making it through the exam, andcelebrating once you’re done.
