Should visitors follow local customs?

As the material standards of living and traveltransportation have undergone tremendous development over the past severaldecades, correspondingly, we have witnessed steady growth in the tourismindustry. With more foreign visitors appearing at tourist destinations, theissue of whether native traditions should be followed has raised substantialpublic attention.

Some local residents, especially those who find foreign cultures intriguing, claim that they will gladly embrace cultural differences for many reasons. To begin with, while travelers are mesmerized bythe local culture, members of the host country can broaden their horizons by observing such newcomers. Not only will this allow local residents to learn more aboutthe world at large, but it will also reinvigorate domestic residents’ passionfor adventures and encourage them to travel overseas. At the same time, by demonstrating cultural compatibility, most visitors will feel more comfortable during their stays. This in turn will polish the host country’s global imageand consequently boost the local tourism industry. Moreover, welcoming cultural differences is essentially demonstrating a superior level of understanding andacceptance of visitors’ identities, which will, in the long run, significantly aid the elimination of racial discrimination and xenophobia on our planet.

However, while foreigners are welcome in most countries, conservatives argue that it is mutually beneficial for visitors tofollows local customs. In many cultures, a certain set of rules must bestrictly followed to show respect. By behaving in the same way as local do, visitors can avoid offending others unknowingly, which may potentially prevent the occurrence of any undesirable conflicts. In addition, learning about indigenous customs isalso an effective way of maximizing tourists’ travel experience. Many culturelovers who visit aboriginal villages find attending spiritual ceremonies anengaging and unforgettable memory.

In conclusion, how foreign visitors should behave vastly depends on the local residents’ attitude towards cultural differences.In relatively tolerant countries, visitors are always welcome whereas incountries that operate under rigid cultural codes, foreign visitors should try to assimilate with local community in order to show respect and enhance their experience.
