Wynyard
Wynyard

Sydney’s third-busiest station Wynyard on track to join 21st century, with $100 million revamp
SYDNEY’S third-busiest train station and a key Barangaroo transport link will be given a $100 million revamp as part of an overhaul of the CBD’s “third world” standard stations.
Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian will today endorse a plan to restore the city’s ageing city stations, with Wynyard station set for its biggest facelift in decades.
The Daily Telegraph can also reveal construction contracts for the redevelopment of the heritage listed underground Museum station are expected to be finalised by October.
The key projects, along with an $8 million upgrade of Town Hall station announced in March, are in response to commuter and business feedback that CBD stations needed a facelift.
Circular Quay station will also have a new lift installed.
“Everyone knows that Wynyard station is a relic of the past, and frankly it is time to upgrade one of Sydney’s busiest transport hubs and give customers what they deserve,” Ms Berejiklian said.
The Wynyard station upgrade will include an overhaul of the concourse and ticket area, including wider ticket gates, new signage to make it easier for patrons to move around, re-tiling, an upgrade of retail outlets, a new paint job and new light fittings.
Ms Berejiklian said the re-design would see less “clutter” on the platforms.
Wynyard station is the gateway to the $6 billion Barangaroo development, and will move thousands of extra customers during peak times.
“Barangaroo’s development, the construction of Wynyard Walk and the proposed light rail line linking Circular Quay to Central and on to Randwick and Kingsford will only make Wynyard more important to Sydney public transport customers.”
Planning approvals for the upgrade will begin within months and customers are expected to experience some inconvenience during construction.
Sydney Business Chamber executive director Patricia Forsythe spent years arguing for upgrades of the CBD rail stations.
“Frankly, I think the major city rail stations look like they belong in the “third world”, Ms Forsythe said.
“The congestion and overall quality of their appearance is not acceptable for a city such as Sydney.
“Upgrades of the stations get a big tick from us. In many ways this will be the outwardly visible sign of the priority the government has given in modernising rail transport in NSW.”
The Museum station is being upgraded under the state’s $770 million Transport Access Program, which has seen 20 stations receive accessibility upgrades since the 2011 election.
Museum will have new lifts, toilets, security upgrades and ramps installed as part of its refurbishment.
Summer Hill resident Sonia Marques catches the train to Wynyard for work every day.
Ms Marques supported the upgrade of the historic station.
“I just hope they retain some of its old character,” Ms Marques said.
