UCL invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the project “Positivity problems at the boundary between combinatorics and analysis”. 

The project has three subprojects: 

1. Complete monotonicity for inverse powers of combinatorial polynomials

2. Coefficientwise total positivity for Hankel matrices of combinatorial polynomials

3. Positivity for roots of some formal power series

This post is funded for 2 years, in the first instance.

The responsibilities of the new Research Associate will include carrying out vigorous, high-level research into one or more aspects of the project as well as interfacing with other team members, and full participation in seminars and colloquia in the subject. The candidate will be requreied to submit publications regularly in refereed journals and participate in national and international conferences. The post holder will be expected to comply with institutional and departmental policies on Fire and Health & Safety Regulations, Equal Opportunities, and other matters. As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the postholder. 

The postholder will be responsible directly to Prof Alan Sokal.

The postholder should have a PhD or equivalent qualification in combinatorics, analysis or related fields of mathematics or mathematical physics as well as research experience in combinatorics, analysis or related fields of mathematics or mathematical physics. They should be proficient in symbolic algebra (e.g. Mathematica or Maple) and have a proven track record in research and publishing. They should also demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on having been awarded a PhD. If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £29,809 - £31,432 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
