Jingdezhen is China’s porcelain capital. Home to imperial kilns for thousands of years, Jingdezhen ceramics were once a representation of “China” to the west. After falling into disarray in the late 1990s, the city has now begun to fill with young artists. Drawn to what has now become an oasis for artists, people from all over China—and the world—come to Jingdezhen in pursuit of artistic inspiration and an independent lifestyle.
Come join us at the Beijing American Center for a screening of “City of Hands,” a documentary that profiles the lives of four young artists in Jingdezhen. The film will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director, Nathaniel Brown. Nathaniel is a filmmaker and was a Fulbright scholar in Jingdezhen in 2013-2014; his work centers around profiling creative communities throughout China. He will be joined by Christy Wittmer, a 2016-2017 Fulbright scholar currently in Jingdezhen.
The film will be in Chinese with English subtitles. The director’s introduction and discussion will be primarily in English, but will be open to questions and discussion in Chinese.
This program is not suitable for children under 6.
