20 year anniversary of the awarding of the design to LAB Architecture Studio + Bates Smart.

Exactly 20 years ago today, former Premier Jeff Kennett announced on 27th July, 1997 that LAB Architecture Studio, in association with Bates Smart Architects had been selected as the designers for the new Federation Square project.

20 years later, the Fed Sq was hosting the Living Cities Forum.

and Damien Bonnice, who sacrificed his professional status to maintain and support the design integrity of the project.

Hard to believe that a project that received so much derision from the Herald Sun and others, could go on to be so transformative to Melbourne.

Shows you what happens when you commission inexperienced, but smart people to do a major project.  If only more like it could happen.
