Twelfth Night is traditionally the date to take down your twinkling Christmas decorations and box them up for another year.
为什么是第12个晚上要拆除所有圣诞的装饰呢？
It is a festival in some branches of Christianity, marking the end of Christmas and the coming of the Epiphany – the Christian celebration of the Three Kings visiting Jesus.
In Western Church traditions, the Twelfth Night concludes the Twelve Days of Christmas, however in others, the Twelfth Night can come before the twelfth day.
Twelfth Night soon became the traditional date to take down festive decorations, which is why today people usually take their decorations down 12 days after Christmas Day.
Before the 19th century, Christmas used to be a 12-day celebration (lucky them).
When is Twelfth Night?
那什么时候才是第12个晚上呢？
For the Church of England, the date falls on January 5, although other Christian groups believe January 6 is correct – because it is the 12th day after Christmas.
The general consensus in the UK seems to have January 5 as Twelfth Night.
Its name comes from it bringing to an end the 12 Days of Christmas – the length of time Christians traditionally celebrated the birth of Jesus.
Taking down decorations a day earlier or later was considered unlucky, and it was thought that if they were left up after Twelfth Night, they should remain in place for the whole year.
People believed that tree spirits lived in festive decorations and while you look after them over Christmas, if you don’t release them afterwards this could have consequences for the rest of the year.
They believed that vegetation would not grow and there would be agricultural problems and food shortages.
究竟是怎么回事呢？
原来在过去，
人们认为三灵隐藏在绿色的植物里，
比如人们用来作为圣诞装饰的冬青和常春藤。
在节日期间，
人们为三灵提供了庇护，
保护它们免遭屋外风雪的摧残，
而一旦圣诞节结束，
人们就要把这些装饰用的绿色去除，
让它们回归自然。
否则，
来年的庄稼将得不到绿色神灵的庇护，
没有了好收成，
人们的生计就会遭到威胁。
虽然在现代，
我们的圣诞节装饰多是人工打造的，
但人们依然会心照不宣地遵循这一古老的“迷信”
以避免来年的霉运。
（每个国家，地区都不太一样，澳洲一般是一般都在6号前拆除，通常是1月5日当天拆除 ）~
