This program will be conducted in English with Chinese interpretation. The film will be in English with Chinese subtitles.
In partnership with the China Women’s Film Festival, the Beijing American Center is proud to host a screening and discussion of the documentary film “Above the Drowning Sea” by Emmy Award-winning producer René Balcer. This film tells the story of how thousands of Jewish people on the eve of World War II escaped from Nazi-controlled Europe to Shanghai with the help of Chinese diplomat Ho Feng Shan. In the film, Jewish refugees and the Chinese who helped them survive recount their harrowing experiences as well as the remarkable friendships that were forged and that still survive to this day. Please join us at the Beijing American Center for a chance to learn more about the oftentimes overlooked role the Chinese played in saving thousands of lives during the Holocaust. After the screening, the film’s directors will be present to lead a discussion about the film.
