Some people believe sport has an important role to society, while other people think sport is just a leisure activity for them. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

With societal development and improved living standards comes debate on many social issues. One such debate centres on the role of sports within society, and while some view sports as a leisurely pursuit, others maintain that sports hold a certain importance. Personally, I think sports play a critical role in a society.

Granted, sports are certainly a leisurely activity for most people. When considering the importance of building a career or raising a family, sports can be an optional interest. Following a certain team, player or event can capture people’s free time, but by definition, free time is allotted after more important aspects of life are taken care of. For example, while I enjoy watching football and basketball, or participating in outdoor events, like many, I only set aside time for those interests when I don’t have to work or study.

Despite their leisurely nature, sports contribute significantly to the economy. Many jobs are created from sports aside from just professional athletes or coaches, and revenues, expenditures and taxes count in the billions. Sporting activities create numerous jobs, like the media personalities, analysts, writers and photographers who cover sports, the physiotherapists and trainers who work with athletes, the food venders and hospitality workers who cater to sporting events, and the manufacturers and retailers who produce and sell sporting equipment, goods and clothing, to name but a few. For example, wildlife and hunting studies have shown that the sport of hunting contributes thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in revenues and fees to local governments each year, not even counting the accommodation, hospitality and good production that thrives as a result from the sport.

While the economic impact is vast, sports also maintain a social importance. People benefit from a healthy work life balance, and sports provide the opportunity to set aside stressful considerations. The Olympics have been practised in some form or another throughout history, dating back to ancient Greece. While war and crises can create uncertainty in the world, sporting events like the Olympics or World Cup provide an outlet for people to forget their worries and find common ground on the basis of competitive sport.

In conclusion, despite the fact that sports are a leisure activity for most people, they contribute heavily to the global economy and provide a distraction that can allow people to find a better work life balance.
