Fred Spoke

Managing Director, Canada Wood China


Fred was appointed Managing Director of Canada Wood Ltd., based in Shanghai, in June 2008. He has an extensive background in China, dating back to 1987, including serving as Minister Counselor (Commercial) at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing (1987-90) and has lived a total of more than 13 years in China. Fred was also the Executive Director of the Canada China Business Council (CCBC) (1998-2001) based in Toronto and served on CCBC’s Board in Shanghai and on the Board of CanCham Shanghai.. He has filled other overseas roles in Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Peru, Guatemala and Brazil). In the private sector he has guided international clients in the development of their China strategies and was the General Manager for Victorinox China Ltd. (Swiss Army brand). Fred speaks reasonable mandarin Chinese as well as several other languages and holds an MBA degree from UBC (1977).


Lisa Bate

Executive Vice President, Asia, B+H Architects


Lisa is an architect, interior designer, an Institute-certified Director, an Evidence-Based Design Accredited and Certified Professional, and a LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction. She is a Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canada Green Building Council and a Past President of the Ontario Association of Architects in Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and is B+H’s representative to the United Nations Environmental Protection – Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative (UNEP-SBCI). In 2012, Lisa relocated from Toronto to Shanghai to support B+H’s strategic growth throughout Asia. As an ambassador for sustainable design, Lisa combines her holistic design skills with over 25 years of experience in project management for feasibility studies, risk investment analysis and highperformance building returns. Her experience at B+H includes the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games sports venues (Greater Toronto area), the master plan for the Bridgetown Pierhead Development (Barbados), Inter Ikea Shopping Centre (Wuhan) and AstraZeneca’s Shanghai Phase III development.


Raefer Wallis

Architect and Founder, GIGA


Raefer Wallis is an internationally renowned architect and entrepreneur bridging the gap between the building industry, green design, IT and business. As founder of A00 Architecture, he has been involved in many firsts, including Asia’s first carbon neutral hotel, the world’s first LEED platinum resort, Asia’s first multi-story modern-rammed earth structures and many more. As founder of GIGA, he is responsible for pioneering cloud solutions for green building that are used by thousands of professionals around the world. Raefer received his masters degree in Architecture from McGill University in Montreal, Canada prior to moving to China in 2001 and setting up his Shanghai practice in 2004. He has co-authored books on modern rammed-earth construction and alternative chemicals assessment, published by Woodhead and the Royal Society of Chemistry respectively. Regularly invited to lecture around the world, his work has been featured by the Clinton Global Initiative, CNN, CBC and TED.


Olivier Brault

General Manager, SOPREMA China


Olivier is a Montreal-born and globally raised young entrepreneur. Having graduated from McGill University in Engineering with part of his degree done at Spain’s Salamanca University, he joined the management team of a Canadian medical device company with operations in Italy. After playing an active role in restructuring the company’s finances and Italian operations, Olivier was directly involved in transferring the company's activities to Shanghai, creating a base for affordable manufacturing of HIV diagnostic tests for the Chinese market. In 2008 he decided to start from scratch in China, teaming up with Norduyn, a Canadian aerospace company aiming to reduce airlines’ carbon footprint through innovative product design. With the help of an assistant, few resources and a simple idea on the drawing board, he set up a sales and manufacturing organization of 150 employees in Shanghai allowing the product to be oversubscribed for some years and a partnership inked with a major European airline. In 2012, Olivier joined Soprema as the General Manager of their China operations, managing and growing a sales team with the objective to become a major player in the waterproofing of green buildings, commercial roofs and bridges.


Oussamah Tamim

Trade Commissioner, Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai


Mr. Tamim joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 2000. His first assignment in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in Ottawa, Canada, was in its Media Relations Office. From 2002 to 2004, he served as Economic Policy Officer for APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) in the International Economic Relations and Summits Division at headquarters. In 2004, he held his first diplomatic assignment abroad as Third Secretary then Second Secretary at the Embassy of Canada in Warsaw, Poland, where he served as a Trade Commissioner to promote Canadian capabilities in the service industries, capital projects, defence/aerospace and EU-related issues. Mr. Tamim was concurrently accredited to the Republic of Belarus where he mainly dealt with market access issues related to agri-food products. In 2007, Mr. Tamim shifted his focus back on Asia and returned to headquarters to hold a position of Senior Trade Policy Officer where he worked on several of Canada’s bilateral and regional free trade initiatives related to the Asia-Pacific region. In 2011, he was assigned to the Canadian Consulate General in Shanghai, China, where he is currently Consul and Trade Commissioner. He is the Team Leader for a transportation team which covers the sectors of aerospace, rail, automotive and logistics, and for a construction team which covers the sectors of forestry products, building products and architectural services.
