Throughout the coming week (9-13 February 2015) UAL is hosting a schedule of University-wide events as part of ‘Green Week’, a nationwide higher education initiative to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Taking place at various College locations, many Green Week events encourage positive action. London College of Fashion is inviting staff and students to get involved in planting a new hedgerow habitat, while the cross-UAL ‘Waste Off Challenge’ (developed and part-funded by LCC) will see students transform waste materials into useful new creations. Central Saint Martins is offering students a workshop on mending clothes and fabrics, and a toolkit that promises to show how to make projects more sustainable. Camberwell College of Arts has set up the ‘Re-use Exchange’ which allows students to drop off excess materials from old projects to be re-used by others.

Some events are designed to provoke discussion, such as London College of Communication’s ‘Creative activism’ series (exploring campaigning, art activism, and global divestment), and London College of Fashion’s ‘Does fashion need nature?’ debate.

Other highlights of the week include 15-minute acupuncture massage sessions; free bike maintenance from Dr Bike; the opportunity to learn about urban bee-keeping; a lecture and workshop on ‘Paleo’ fitness; two walking tours of London’s green spaces and waterways; the ‘mindful yurt’ installation; and film screenings including Project Wild Thing and How to Change the World – in which filmmaker Jerry Rothwell discusses his award-winning documentary film about the founding of Greenpeace.
