乡土爵士乐出现在嘻哈音乐之前，是一种结合了摇滚、节奏和布鲁斯，以及爵士的迷人的音乐。

它的特点是鲜明的低音吉他曲谱和切分音打击乐节奏。传奇歌手、曲作者和乐队领队 James Brown自称是这种音乐的首创。

虽然这种说法有争议，但是没人可以质疑我们所知道的他对乡土爵士乐的影响。他标志性的即兴重复乐段，也就是“ the Funky Drummer”，恰如其名。

这种乐段会一直出现在如此多的嘻哈音乐歌曲里，以至于据说 Brown专门有一个法务团队，就是为了处理这一首歌的授权事宜。

#AmericanMusic – Funk: Before there was hip-hop, there was funk -- an intriguing fusion of rock, rhythm and blues, and jazz defined by prominent bass guitar lines and syncopated percussion.  

Legendary singer, songwriter and band leader James Brown claims to have invented the genre, and while that claim may be disputed, no one can challenge his impact on funk as we know it.  

The signature percussion riff underpinning the aptly named "the Funky Drummer" would go on to be sampled in so many hip-hop songs it’s been reported Brown had a legal team engaged just to handle the licensing of that one song.
