Canada Wood has an opening for a Technical Assistant to work in our Shanghai, (Pudong) office. We are seeking a candidate with a civil engineering degree and 1-3 years experience in construction projects in China.
Candidate Profile
Thisis a position for a native Chinese speaker who has English language proficiency. The ideal candidate combines education in civil engineering with several years experience working on construction projects in China, and also offers familiarity with wood structural design. The candidate needs to embrace teamwork and be a strong communicator. Experience with English to Chinese translation isan asset. Experience assisting classroom instructors is also an asset.
Mandate
The goal of Canada Wood’s technical transfer initiatives is to increase the capacity to design and build with wood. This involves acting as an advisor to architects,engineers, construction managers and regulatory officials. This Technical Assistant will work with a team to implement several technical transfer initiatives.
Hierarchy
The Technical Assistant will report to Canada Wood’s Training Manager, and will collaborate with our Training Specialist, Design Specialist and Construction Specialist as well as with short-term contractors.
JobDescription
Canada Wood’s training and construction support initiatives are typically conducted in small teams of two to four employees. The purpose ofthe teams is to deliver training sessions, to produce technical literature andto solve practical challenges for companies who are not familiar with wood construction. This position will be responsible for learning about wood building systems while supporting Canada Wood’s construction experts. Typical tasks include:
preparing materials and tools for training events
translating in the classroom for foreign instructors
accompanying the Construction Specialist in visiting jobsites
revising course curriculum materials
maintaining relationships with builders, vocational schools and students
helping the Training Manager prepare reports.
Skills/Experience
understand the design and construction approval process
written communication skills for report writing and technical writing
Auto CAD, Sketchup, MS Office software programs
verbal communication skills to give briefings in both English and Chinese
motivated to learn about wood building systems

Thisis a position for a native Chinese speaker who has at least CET 4 level English.The ideal candidate combines 5 or more years experience as an instructor with education in construction or design, and some exposure to wood building systems. The candidate must embrace teamwork and be a strong communicator. Experience planning training courses and creating course curriculum is also desired.
