Teju Cole, an author, photographer and Nigerian-born American historian and literary critic of The New York Times, is a well-known member of the Nigerian diaspora community in America.  Nigeria is the largest source of African immigrants to the United States, and Texas boasts one of the largest Nigerian diaspora communities in the country.  Out of the 376,000 Nigerian immigrants living in the United States, 40,000 reside in Texas.  The Nigerian diaspora in America is highly educated with 39% of Nigerians age 25 and older holding a master’s degree, PhD, or an advanced professional degree.  

Nigerians have formed powerful diaspora networks that promote the development of Nigeria, the arts and culture of the homeland, women’s empowerment, or the provision of health and other social services to vulnerable populations.
