Academic Task 2 Sample Essay

In schools and universities, girls tend to choose arts while boys like science. What are the reasons and do you think this trend should be changed?

The tendency for females to select the arts and males to choose science-related studies at schools and universities is due to a longstanding tradition of gender bias. This trend should definitely be changed, as both men and women are just as capable of science and arts as each other.

Preferences in fields differ according to gender due to traditional gender stereotypes that boys and girls have inherently different cognitive abilities, which in the long run has meant that they have chosen subjects that would play to their strengths. Century-old stereotypes have led us to believe that women are more emotional and creative, which will allow them to excel in the arts. Meanwhile, men have been thought to be more rational and logical, thereby allowing them to be great doctors or scientists. It is understandably so that young students have bought into this belief, thinking they should choose subjects they would naturally do well in depending on their gender. These stereotypes have hence been the reason why girls and boys choose different fields.

In my opinion, this trend should definitely be changed as women and men have proven their capabilities in different fields unlike this stereotype. Undoubtedly, there are women who excel in science and men who are successful authors. For instance, China has proven that women are just as capable in science after sending 2 female astronauts outer space in 2016. Meanwhile, men have proven to thrive in the arts, with more male authors dominating the book world. Due to these reasons, I believe that the trend of selecting fields of study according to genders should be abolished.

In conclusion, whilst the tendency for girls to select the arts and boys to select science have been dictated by gender stereotypes, I personally believe that we should rid this trend as women and men are just as capable as each other in science and arts.
