Many young people spend too much free time in shopping malls. Some people think this has negative impacts on young people and the society they live in. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There is a common belief that many youngsters spend too much of their leisure time at shopping centres. I disagree that this has negative impacts, and believe that malls are a great place for them to spend time with their families with the many entertainment options available.
【key vocabulary】
Youngster: 年轻人,a young person of either sex
Entertainment: 娱乐,消遣,an activity that is diverting and that holds the attention
On the one hand, shopping malls encourage heavy consumerism and spending too much time there has negative impacts on young people and society in general in terms of expenditure. Malls house an array of shops, from affordable fashion to luxury branded goods to entice youngsters to spend money. For instance, the general target audience of stores like Topshop and Zara tend to target young adults, encouraging them to spend lots to have the latest trends, thus encouraging a consumerist society and young people to waste money.
【key vocabulary】
Consumerism: 消费主义,用户至上主义,a movement advocating greater protection of the interests of consumers
Consumerist: 主张消费主义的人

House: Vt. 覆盖,给… 房子住, provide housing for…
An array of: 一批,大量
Entice: Vt. 诱使,怂恿, provoke someone to do something through (often false or exaggerated) promises or persuasion
On the other hand, shopping malls are a great way for youngsters to spend time with families and is beneficial for teenagers themselves as well as society. Malls have various forms of entertainments like cinemas and large food courts to accommodate families, making it opportunistic for teenagers to bond with parents and siblings. This is especially evident at Chadstone shopping mall in Melbourne, where many young people spend time with families on weekends or have a meal together, in turn benefiting local family ties within communities. In this regard, youngsters spending time at shopping malls with families has its positive impacts.
【key vocabulary】
Accommodate: 容纳,使适应
Opportunistic: 机会主义的,投机取巧的,taking immediate advantage, often unethically, of any circumstance of possible benefit
Bond with: 和…绑在一起,绑定
In turn: 反过来,转而,轮流,依次
Family ties: 家庭关系
In this regard: 就这一点而言,在这一点上
I personally disagree that it is wholly negative for young people and society to be spending time at shopping malls. Whilst they may encourage unnecessary spending, it is a much healthier choice than engaging in illicit activities such as drinking alcohol or doing drugs. Instead, as mentioned above, malls can encourage familial bonding within young adults due to the many facilities and shops available. On a bigger scale, society benefits as a whole with less young adults on backstreets and instead spending time with their families.
【key vocabulary】
Illicit: 违法的,不正当的, contrary to or forbidden by law
Familial: 家庭的,家族的,relating to or having the characteristics of a family
On a bigger scale: 在更大的范围内,更大规模
In conclusion, young people may waste money at shopping malls. However, I disagree that it is entirely negative, as shopping centres afford families time and areas to bond in a positive ways that benefit youngsters as well as society.
