2018.01.06 Academic Task 2 Sample Essay

Q: Some people think that it is more beneficial to take part in team sports such as football, while others think that taking part in individual sports such as tennis or swimming is better. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Alternative views exist on what type of sports are more beneficial. Some individuals, including me, consider partaking in team sports such as football as more advantageous, whereas others consider partaking in individual sports such as tennis or swimming as better.

•Vocabulary•

  • partake in:

e.g.: The trouble is that although the managers partake in the upside, they share none of the downside.

  • whereas:

然而,鉴于,反之, used to say that although is true of one thing, it is not true of another.

e.g.: Special tax rules are not reviewed regularly whereas agency budgets are subject to annual review.

On the one hand, participating in individual sports such as tennis or swimming can be helpful for a person to gain personality traits that foster independence. In other words, individual sports allow one to gain self-reliance and confidence. For instance, swimming athletes practice the sport habitually on their own without depending on others, making them acquire autonomy and self-assurance with which they are able to focus on themselves exclusively and gain attentiveness to detail regarding their performance and fitness which could extend to other aspects of their personal lives.

•Vocabulary•

  • trait:

e.g.: Belk found that the most obsessive collectors had one overwhelming trait in common: loneliness.

  • attentiveness:

On the other hand, team sports are extremely beneficial as they impart crucial personal skills such as teamwork and cooperation. When a person plays some sport alongside other individuals, it enables him to gain exposure to group dynamics allowing him to communicate, strategize and collaborate with others.  For example, in football, eleven diverse people work in a team to win a match requiring them to understand, respect and support one another, and making each team member realise the importance of team spirit and partnership. Overall, team sports enhance one’s ability to work in a group effectively and amiably, which is a necessary skill in today’s world.

•Vocabulary•

  • impart:

Vt.

e.g.: Bank supervisors can impart only so much common sense to those who think they know best.

只要fully address the topic
