As many of you know we are starting with the Duke of Edinburgh International Award (IA) program at CISH this year for all interested Gr 8 – Gr12’s. I am meeting with all MYP and DP students on Thursday 30 August at 12pm in the CISH auditorium to introduce the program to them. After this Iwill give all interested students a chance to sign up to the program so we canstart as soon as possible. If you want your child to be part of this wonderfulexperience please ask them to stay behind after the assembly on Thursday. Iwill send them home with a letter for you to sign and return to me.

1. Skill section – Young people must spend at leastone hour per week learning a new life skill (outside of school lessons). Thereare hundreds of different activities that young people can choose from. Popularchoices include music, art, drama, cooking, DJing, committee skills, graffitiart and sign language. Unfortunately, sports cannot count for this section(even though you need to learn skills to do them), this is because sports comeunder the physical recreation section.

This givesyoung people the opportunity to get out into their communities and givesomething back (Note: This cannot be working for free for a commercial organisationlike a hairdresser, shop, caf etc).

4. Adventurous Journey section - The Adventurous Journey is aunique opportunity for your child to experience self-reliance and team work inan outdoor environment. The length of the Adventurous Journey varies dependingon the level of the Award.

The Award will take the best part ofa year to complete and because it is our first year we hope all students thatare part of the IA achieve theirBronze award. A lot of self-discipliner and effective time-management isrequired for students to do this. I, along with other members of staff, willsupport all students as best we can but ultimately the responsibility lies withthe individual. Where possible, encourage your child to select their ExtraCurricular Activities so that it meets some of the criteria as set out above.
