Are you planning to go to Australia for University? I am sure you have done your research about this wonderful country down under; but you, like many new arrivals to this sunny continent, might still have a few misleading ideas about it. As a Chinese student who has been based here for a while, I'm hoping I can dispel a few myths about life in the great southern land.
1、You can see kangaroos everywhere
While Australia can definitely boast a scenic environment, and friendly habitats for lots of protected animal species, that does not mean you can see kangaroos just chilling out in your neighborhood. I remember the first time I saw a real kangaroo: it was somewhere couple of hours' drive away from where I live in Melbourne. If you really wanted to spot one of these majestic creatures, your best chances are way out in the countryside.
2、It's all about sunny beach-weather, everyday
I can tell you, with my seven years of life experience here, that Melbourne has way more rain than sun. One of the city's most common experiences is the phenomenon of “four seasons in one day”, with the weather fluctuating from summer to winter (via spring and autumn) in just a couple of hours. Most Sydneysiders, however, are lucky enough to enjoy the beach weather much more than us Melbournians.
3、Australians have BBQs everyday
BBQ for Australians is a kind of small “treat”, a fun time to have their mates around and drink a beer or two. BBQ is often held in parks or on the beaches where facilities are available for free – but it is hardly a daily occurrence. That said, when Aussies do crack open the “barbie” (to use the local lingo), they do it in style.
4、Australians speak a mixture of British and American English
Australians mainly follow the standard English – but they tweak on it every now and them. You will be surprised how unique Aussie language is, especially when it comes to slangy words and daily expressions. You probably have heard of some Aussie phrases like “no worries”, but lots of them await for you to explore!
5、Australian university grading systems are the same as China's
While most universities give you an overall mark out of 100 at semester end, you will find students talking about their result on a scale of pass (50-59), credit (60-69), distinction (70-79) and high distinction (80+), which is similar to the UK system. Whilst 70% might sound like a less than impressive result in many tests, as an overall semester mark it is a very good achievement! Now you know what it means when students say they want an “HD” average.
6、 Australian students are slackers
Compared to Chinese schools, Australian schools value sports, creativity and individuality more than how many or how quickly math problems are solved – but this does not mean students slack at school. Lots of high achievers work very hard especially in Year 12 to get into their dream Universities, and they continue their good study habits and good grades in Universities too. So do not underestimate your fellow Australian students, and keep up with the good work if you want to continue to be a “XueBa”!
