The talk of the town

意思：是热门话题的意思，就是现在经常说的头条

例：The sand sculptures are the talk of the town this summer.

这个短语可以是绯闻和信息的意思，围绕某一事物或者某人开展的话题，一般也会包含一些不确定是否属实的细节。

Water down something

意思：短语有很多种意思，表面的意思是稀释某事物，同时也可以是削弱影响或者力量的意思：

例：Someone watered down the orange juice and now it is so weak I can`t taste the orange.

例：The new club president`s powers have been watered down by the board members.

I know him from way back

意思：短语way back的意思是很久之前，整个短语就是说我已经认识某人很久了，也可以用作“we go a long way back”意思是一样的。

例：-Do you know Tom？

-Yes I do. I know him from way back.

Put yourself in someone’s shoes

意思：换位思考，站在别人的立场上考虑问题。这个短语一般都用来鼓励别人从对方的角度思考问题，更容易理解对方所做的决定。

例：Put yourself in his shoes, how would you like to work 7 days a week?

There is no rose without thorns

意思：天下没有无刺的玫瑰。意思是在享受一些美好而愉悦的事物同时，你也必须要接受一些困难和痛苦的事，世界上没有十全十美的事。短语往往都用于玩笑话或者一些小抱怨的情形下。

例：It is a very well paid job and I know I will love it, but travelling for an hour and 30 mins each day by train will be difficult. Oh well, there is no rose without thorns.

To get the ball rolling

意思：开始，着手做某事。

例：To get the ball rolling, I would like to ask the team members of the 3rd placed team to come up to the podium to collect their medals.

Out of the fire and into the fry pan

意思：跳出油锅落入烈火，形容情况越来越糟。

例：She changed rooms to get more sleep, now there is a noisy building site outside her room, out of the frying pan and into the fire.
