Rocketing house prices and years without real-terms wages growth haveprompted a growing number of younger people to give up the idea of ever owningtheir own home, according to a major report on attitudes to getting on theproperty ladder.

The proportion of people aged between 20 and 45 putting money aside fora deposit had been steady for three years but fell last year by six percentagepoints to 43%, according to the Generation Rent report from the bank Halifax.

In a blow to government hopes that its help-to-buy mortgage subsidyscheme had turned around attitudes, the lender said its report strengthens theview that more people may be abandoning the dream of home ownership andaccepting the idea of long-term renting. It suggested lower levels of ownershipmay become “the new normal”.

The separate campaign group, also called Generation Rent, blamed thefall in deposit saving on a 20% rise in house prices over the last two years.

“This wouldn’t be a problem if renting was a legitimate alternative tohome ownership, but it is expensive, insecure and often of poor quality,” aspokesperson said.

The Halifax report follows a series of embarrassing figures for thechancellor, George Osborne, and business secretary, Vince Cable, who havespearheaded the government’s campaign to stimulate housebuilding by boostingdemand.

But the Halifax report found that while 53% of people said they believedthe scheme has had a positive impact, most thought first-time buyers still findit difficult to get finance. The lender found 79% of 20- to 45-year-oldsbelieved banks do not want to lend to first-time buyers, and 21% believe it isvirtually impossible for first-time buyers to obtain a mortgage.

Non-homeowners said they would bewilling to put money aside for about five years and four months to save for adeposit at £33 a week.

While I am happy for you, it depends on a lot of factors that happen.The kind of contacts, choices made, lifestyle, friends, family, ethnicity, etc.
I've worked very hard, same age as yourself, have 2 mathematical degrees but inover 70k in debt. Not through partying I might add.

I'm 34, working class family background, no university degree, took manyexams in my 20s to become an accountant whilst renting, partying and doing longhours in London.
I now earn £80K and am about to buy my first flat: a very pleasant2-bedder in zone 5 in South East London, a 30 minute commute. Single, no kids.
I appreciate everyone has different circumstances but anyone who can'tachieve this for themselves after 18 years of free education lacks either thebrainpower or the ambition.
And before anyone starts whining about nurses not being paid very welletc etc etc, this isn't a communist state, you've got choices- you can have ahouse and loads of money but you've got to make the appropriate choices andsadly those choices don't include being a low earner.
It's there if you want it.
