Success

成功

Written by David Kruchko

The word success can create a tremendous amount of anxiety for ambitious students. Your parents talk about how successful their son or daughter has been thus far in his or her academic career. You receive a grade on an important test and that grade determines how successful you are in that particular subject. If you have a lot of friends and a boyfriend/girlfriend, you are considered to be socially successful. One day, after college/graduate school, you will be asked, “What do you do?” How you answer this question will provide the person who asked with an idea of how successful you are. After all, success is defined by having a well-respected career and being paid handsomely, right?

In life, the word success seems to suffocate us. You should not let it. The word that should most motivate you is passion. Passion will be the driving force when you are up late in the library studying Advanced Astrophysics. Passion will be the force that will allow you to continue trying to understand a subject after 10 failed attempts. Trust me, everyone has and everyone will fail to understand a difficult concept at some point. The brain is designed to fail every so often. The student who understands that failure is critical for learning will thrive and find a way to understand a difficult concept. Such perseverance will be difficult to have if the student simply has a desire to be successful. If the student is truly passionate about the topic, he or she will develop the resilience to learn the concept.

My passion is medicine. That passion is what allowed me to spend 25+ hours/week studying and memorizing dozens of biochemical pathways. I am passionate about the functioning of the human body. I am passionate about using this knowledge to treat patients appropriately so that they overcome their specific ailment. If I was simply searching for a career that would deem me successful, I would be unhappy with my career choice. Furthermore, I would certainly be unhappy that I have to undertake massive debt for the next four years in order to pursue a career in medicine.

I knew too many students in my pre-medical program that simply wanted to be successful and have the public notoriety of being a physician. A large majority of these students either dropped out of the program or are unhappy as medical students/working as physicians. I also work with physicians who either never had or have lost the passion for medicine and have admitted that they chose the career because of the public notoriety. These people are unhappy, despite being successful. These physicians are not among the best physicians with whom I have worked, and are ironically unsuccessful based on their own definition of success.

Although I do not like the word success, I want to be clear that success and passion are not mutually exclusive. In other words, if you follow your passion, you can still have a well-respected career and be paid handsomely. If you want to call that successful, then that is your decision. I just believe the word success is too superficial. Success does not incorporate the necessary passion that one needs to attain a particular goal. Moreover, pursuing a passion that does not traditionally lead to a lucrative job does not mean that you will not be paid well or receive public notoriety. It just means that you have to apply your passion and be creative to attain those two things.

Don’t simply be successful. Be passionate and let all else follow.
