Beyond the Classroom at an American University

Here it is. What you’ve always been waiting for. Your first day of orientation at a university in the US. You’re excited, but you’re also overwhelmed. People are handing out flyers for events on every street corner, there are fairs where different organizations are trying to get you to dedicate your time to their cause, and you’re trying to have a life while talking classes, doing research, working, and doing a thousand other things. What are you supposed to do!?!?

It’s going to be ok. Take a deep breath. Good.

First off, while your classes and academic achievement are incredibly important, it’s also important for you to fully immerse yourself in American culture and life at an American university. One way of doing that is to get connected with campus life. Here are a few ways you can do that:

Clubs and organizations

Do you like sports, music, or some obscure board game? Are you passionate about a philanthropic cause or do you like to learn languages? There’s probably a student-run club or organization for you at your university. Try going to a couple of their meetings, and if you like it, keep going! This is a great way for you to unwind and blow of some steam from your coursework. It’ll also help you meet other students, both from the US and abroad, and improve your English while also learning other things. Try out several different things in the beginning, and then try to choose just a couple to get really involved in.

Cultural Events

Don’t forget to explore the local culture! Many museums, theaters, and other venues offer special discounts for students, or have deals throughout the year. This is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon, explore a new part of the city, and also learn something new. If you’re living in a dormitory or other campus residence, ask your residential advisor (RA/GA) about organizing a trip close by.

You can also take advantage of the performances of student organizations. Most universities have a good variety of music, dance, theater, and acrobatic organizations that put on performances throughout the year. These can be a romantic date, a casual outing for a group of friends, or a solo study break. Like what you see? Many of these clubs also offer workshops or dance nights where you can actually learn to dance like a K-Pop star or a Bollywood actress. Join in the fun and discover a passion you never knew you had!

Talks, Lectures, and more

Universities have endowments to bring famous people from around the world to speak to their student bodies. I have seen Bill Nye the Science Guy, Ravi Zacharias, Richard Dawkins, Penn and Teller, Vice President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama, and many, many others because of the opportunities at my universities. Often, professors even have round tables and discussions with small groups of students to explore things they could never learn in their classes. This is a great way of expanding your horizons outside the classroom as well. Of course, there’s often free food too.

Bill Nye the Science Guy, Ravi Zacharias, Richard Dawkins, Penn and Teller, Vice President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama以及其它血多名人。

In short, remember that there are a lot of ways to become a well-rounded, well-educated college graduate. Your experiences outside the classroom can be as important as those you have inside the classroom.

Good luck on your adventures!
