We don’t require a TOEFL/ TOEFL junior score. We are trying tode-emphasis on our school the reliance on test scores. Again, what we look for is the presentation of your child in their application; what they have to sayabout themselves; what their references have to say; and the interests andpassion they express in gaining the admission to our school is more important to us than a certain TOEFL score. So we do not have just a set cut off for anacceptable TOEFL score.
We take a very creative approach – don’t rely too much on testscores. Because I have seen as an educator, it that some students would come tous with the high test scores, and they are the poorly motivated students, andthey don’t fully take advantage of the learning opportunities. So what our admission office tries to do is to very carefully try to discern the ambition and the motivation of the child.
For our school, we don’t require it, we would accept it, we know how to read the scores and we can tell something from the scores, but that’s not what really decides who we select. And we will try to look at the overall characters and the qualities of the students, and not just rely on a simple test score. If a student comes to us and has a TOEFL score, 50 or 60, that does tell something, but what I have seen is that if a student come to us and we can see they are highly motivated, they will learn English very quickly in our environment because they immerse in it in every day and speaking English everyday with the students who can’t speak to them in Chinese. These are younger learners, and their ability to acquire a second language is much greater than our ability to acquire a second language.
To be host, the more a student is immersed in an American environment, the greater advantages they are going to have in an Americanuniversity. If your son or daughter can go to an American college preparatory school in the US, they will probably have a more accelerated rate than then would just staying here. But, if the students here are highly motivated, and they get into a good program here, and they are immersed in English, and they are immersed learning activities, they will be well-prepared.
I do want to share with you a student coming into our program, even though we don’t emphasize test taking, we will make sure that they are prepared to do well on the SAT, and do well on the TOEFL, for entering into the colleges, because although some American universities are no longer placing emphasis on SAT and TOEFL scores, many do. So, we give our students a fair advantage. Even thought we don’t emphasize it, we will offer good test-prep classes for them.
It can be, but there is no correlation between high SAT scores and high success in American Universities. But, the majority the people is still playing the game. As a result of that, we have to make sure that our students are prepared to play that game.
Would you please explain the honor courses to us?
回答:The honor courses are courses that have greater work demand. The students in our honor courses will have more projects to do, where they can demonstrate a higher level of proficiency in the subject areas. They may have to do a major creative project, almost like a master thesis in graduate schools. It requires many hours of additional work, apart from what students usually do in a regular class.
Our teachers are very nurturing, supportive, and understanding to students who are coming from other countries and making a transition. We don’thave extreme high expectations on them immediately. We help them grow intothose expectations.
Your child’s dignity is the most important thing for us to protect. So we will not do anything to endanger their self-dignity. So we will not throw challenges immediately. That will overwhelm them.
