Teach HNR 360 American Encounters with China. This seminar focuses on the modern history of United States-China relations as viewed through the biographies of Americans who have been deeply involved with China. We will consider the lives of diplomats, politicians, revolutionaries, business persons, religious leaders, artists, architects, journalists, scientists, scholars, and others. Each of you will be asked to study one of these individuals.

One goal for the seminar is to consider the value of biography, both as a creative process and as a way to interpret history. Another is to gain the research and writing skills needed to produce a compelling story. A third goal is to shed light on the ideas, attitudes, and experiences that have shaped American thinking about China. Fall 2017

Duties include the following:

• Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.

• Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.

• Preparing lectures, projects or other student assignments.

• Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of 2 hour(s) per week.

• Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class.

• Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.

• Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.

• Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations.

• Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.

• Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.

• Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by your department’s policies for part-time instructors.

Your professional responsibilities to the department include:

• Providing an updated CV annually or upon the department/school/college request.

• Providing written notice to the Dean and/or Department Chair if you desire to terminate or if you cannot meet the obligations of this appointment.

• Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
