Jonathan Wu was a reluctant starter butan unusual test in “accounting stamina” steered him in the right direction.
Jonathan Wu is very aware how fortunate he is. The 28-year-old heads up Premium China Funds Management, part of the SWU Group of companies started by his father, Simon, in the early 1980s.
SWU is a one-stop finance shop covering all aspects of accounting, financial planning and funds management, specialising in doing business with China.
Last year Money Management magazine named Wu its Young Achiever of the Year, but before that success, Wu had faced a struggle about what to do with his life.
“Like any good Asian child, my options were doctor, lawyer, accountant. I wanted to do something to make my family proud, but I couldn’t be a doctor because I’m scared of blood,” Wu says.
“I didn’t get the marks for law and the only other field outside the usual considerations was computer engineering or software engineering – but I’m not the type of person to sit at a computer all day only to find I’d put some code in the wrong place.”
That left accounting – probably alogical choice given SWU’s accounting arm.
“Mum and Dad decided I should have some solid work experience. Dad told the staff to test my patience and I was given a large box crammed with a year’s receipts, unsorted.
“I understood chronological order but that was all. Two weeks later I finished. It drove me mad. It is, as my fathersaid, part of professional life and it’s a story I tell graduates coming through our business.
"If you can’t last two weeks, how can you last 40 years?”
The “work experience” continued with a commerce degree at the University of Sydney and an internship as an analyst at Investors Mutual on the side. Wu was grateful for the experience but admits he emerged still uncertain.
“I had the skills and experience to be an accountant or an analyst but didn’t want to do either for the rest of my life. Dad decided to create a China fund and asked if I wanted to join him. I didn’t know anything about sales but I thought ‘what can I lose?’”
Within three years he had raised more than A$300 million. Then came the global financial crisis. Wu learned not to be complacent, and was determined to take a positive from the experience.
If you can’t last two weeks, how can you last 40 years?
“Once the markets began drying up, I saw some business development managers were avoiding their clients,” Wu says.
“I didn’t do that and it gave me anadvantage when the good times returned. Clients know you have no control over the portfolio, but keep them informed and you build trust and respect.”
In the years since, Wu has written a book exploring Asia as an investment destination, Asia: The New Investment Paradigm. He’s also partnered with the Hong Kong Australia Business Association to create the Young Professionals Alliance mentoring program. And he’s working on his MBA.
“Anything and anyone I can learn from,I try. You have to grab everything in life with both hands. Not everything you do will succeed, but if you don’t try, you don’t know.
“Dad reminds me that I must improve on what he has done. My goal for the next 10 years is to make our business a one-stop shop for all things financial. I want our clients knowing whatever were commend for their family is what we do for ourselves.”
There is another goal, too.
“I want to get married and have kids, but I want to see them grow up. Running a business with really good people allows me to do that.
“Far too many friends have children and never see them due to work. I don’t want to miss the milestones. Business opportunities come and go; family doesn’t. That’s once in your life. I want to provide well for my family, but I want to live every moment of that life.”
