China's slower growth is the 'new normal': President Xi Jinping
China economic news:
• Annual inflation rose 1.8 per cent in April from April 2013, just below expectations.
• China’s President Xi Jinping stated that China’s slower growth is the “new normal”: “Wemust boost our confidence, adapt to the new normal condition based on thecharacteristics of China’s economic growth in the current phase, and staycool-minded.”
• China's Premier Li Keqiang warned that the size of China’s foreign currency reserves“could affect inflation”: “Foreign exchange reserves have become a big burdenfor us, because such reserves translate into the base money, which could affectinflation… From China's perspective, macroeconomic controls could facetremendous pressures if the overall trade is imbalanced."
Germany - Germany's trade surplus shrank in March to a surplusof 14.8 bilion euros from February’s surplus of 15.7 billion euros. Exportswere down 1.8 per cent and imports fell 0.9 per cent.
Portugal - Standard & Poor's upgraded its outlookfor Portugal to “stable” from “negative”.
US markets – the S&P 500 index rose 0.15 per centon Friday night, with the Dow closing at a record high. IBM and Gap helped pushthe market higher.
European markets – the Stoxx Europe 600 index fell 0.3per cent on Friday night as investors were nervous ahead of a separatistreferendum in parts of eastern Ukraine.
Asian markets – the FTSE CNBC Asia 100 index rose 0.2per cent on Friday as some interpreted a low inflation reading from China asincreasing the probability of China’s government taking further stimulusmeasures to the economy.
Australia - The Australian dollar is trading at US93.57, down fromUS93.69 over the weekend.

• Oil –West Texas Intermediate crude is trading down 29c to US$99.98 a barrel
• Goldis trading down US$1.30 to US$1289.30 an ounce
