Tuesday, September 25, 18:30 Progressin Our National Art: Robert Henri, Alfred Stieglitz, and the Rise of AmericanModernism

On September 25th, the Shanghai American Center will host Professor DavidCateforis, Chair of the Art History Department at the University of Kansas.During the talk "Progress in Our National Art: Robert Henri, AlfredStieglitz, and the Rise of American Modernism”, he will discuss the painter andteacher Robert Henri (1865-1929) and the photographer and gallery owner AlfredStieglitz (1864-1946), two major figures in the history of early 20th-centuryAmerican art who contributed to the rise of American modernism.

Robert Henri and Alfred Stieglitz were bothwere powerful presences in the New York art world who contributed in differentways to the rise of American modernism.  Henri is associated with realismand Stieglitz with abstraction, yet both championed individualism and freedomof expression as fundamental values of modern American art. This lecture willconsider the impact of each man on the art of his time and examine the art ofthe painters they supported, who include John Sloan and George Bellows (in thecase of Henri) and Georgia O’Keeffe and Marsden Hartley (in the case ofStieglitz).
