Australia's biggest telcois hoping to get members of the public hooked on its national Wi-Fi network byoffering the service for free until its official launch early next year.

Telstra on Wednesdayswitched on the first 150 hotspots out of an initial 1000 free trial locationsin urban and regional centres that are due to go live before Christmas.

Then, from early nextyear, users will have to pay.

Existing Telstra customerswill use up their home broadband allowance when connecting to the publicnetwork, while non-Telstra customers will have to buy guest passes for "asmall charge".

The ambitious project will see more than two million Wi-Fihotspots installed in public areasacross the country over five years.

Telstra payphones willdeliver the service at the first live hotspots, including at Melbourne's BourkeStreet Mall, Sydney's Hyde Park and Brisbane's King George Square.

Hotspots will in somecases be placed at locations where free public Wi-Fi is already available –such as at Melbourne's Federation Square.
此外，Telstra通信公司的热点还会被设置在一些已有的公共免费WI-FI区域。比如墨尔本联邦广场。
A Telstra spokespersonsaid its network would outperform the existing iPrimus network, in this particularcase.
一位Telstra发言人声称，Telstra的网络在一些特殊的情况下要比现在的iPrimus的网络要更好！
Telstra stores andexchanges will house additional hotspots as the rollout continues.
Telstra电信的商店和营业场所将会随着这个计划设置额外的热点。
The multi-million dollarnetwork, announced in May, reaches as far as Katherine to Margaret River, ByronBay to Launceston.

Optus is reportedly looking to build a rival public Wi-Finetwork of its own.
