2015.08.29 G类Task 2 范文
Some people think that advertising is useful and informative. Other people think advertising provides false information and simply increases prices of goods. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
其实,大家可以试着把这个题目简化一下:既然是discuss both views,那么就先确立两个观点——advertising is useful and informative, 还是 false information & increase price? 】
More people have begun to question the actions of companies in recent years, and this has brought up debates about advertising, with some maintaining that ads serve a purpose, while others argue they are misleading and only work to raise prices. Personally, I do not think all advertisements can be placed into one category, as some are helpful and some are misleading.
【显而易见,作者的观点是some ads are helpful but some are misleading.
Granted, advertising certainly raises the price of goods. As a fundamental aspect of business, companies must sell products at prices greater than their costs, so as to make a profit. As advertising typically incurs a cost, prices must be set at a point high enough to cover the additional cost of advertising.
Meanwhile, the use of advertising to increase sales with misleading tactics is concerning. Whether looking at previous campaigns that were aimed at making smoking look cool to children, or unhealthy foods that are marketed towards kids, ads can misrepresent the reality of some products. Personally, I can remember ads for sugar-filled cereals like “Cocoa Puffs” that stated the cereal was part of a healthy breakfast, when in reality, the amount of sugar consumed in one bowl exceeded the recommended daily amount of sugar.
However, advertising can be used to inform people on important issues. As technology has increased, new concerns have also come about, and one such example is the practice of texting while driving. Studies have shown that distracted driving has led to many accidents, endangering lives in the process. I can still remember ads that warned against the practice, one in particular that showed the last text of a 16 year old girl before she died in an accident.
Personally, I feel that advertisements need to be judged on an individual basis. While some can be misleading, and others informative, many more are also simply used to promote brand awareness and recognition. Commercials like those for ‘Red Bull’ use the slogan “Red Bull gives you wings’. To use a legal term, the ad is not misleading but only ‘mere puffery’, as no reasonable person would actually believe a product could give them wings. Such advertising is a cost that serves companies well, and it would be wrong to ban this type of ad, or an informative one, on the basis that some are highly questionable.
作者觉得,advertisements need to be judged on an individual basis.
In conclusion, many companies use advertising as a tool, and despite the fact that some companies misuse that tool, many advertise their products or services responsibly, while governments can use ads to inform the public on important topics, which means that all ads need to be judged on their own merit.
