Q 1: render 这个词既可以做名词又可以做动词,但是每种词性的中文意思看起来简直千差万别,比如名词指交纳,粉刷,打底。这三个中文词看起来几乎毫无联系。那render 这个词来源是什么?常用于什么场景之中呢?
►Render can mean different things in different contexts. Here are some examples. The two main meanings are:
1. To provide or give a service.
2. To become or to cause something to become.
1. We will send you an invoice and bill for the services rendered (services provided).
2. The terrible storm rendered his trip to the airport, almost impossible. There were terrible floods and traffic jams.
Q 2: I would like to know the difference between crash ,impact and collision. Thank you.
►Crash: when something collides with something else and causes an accident.
Impact: the force of "hitting" when something collides or runs into something else.
Collision: the act of one thing hitting another thing, or two things hitting each other.
Q 3: Excuse me, I want to ask you the difference between entirely and totally. Thanks a lot.
►Entirely sounds better and more formal than totally. Totally as an adverb is usually used more colloquially or is used to mean the same as entirely. Look at the examples.
1. The car was totally destroyed after the accident.
2. The car was entirely destroyed after the accident.
3. The movie was great! It was totally awesome!
4. I'm not entirely sure where Mark has gone on holiday.
5. I'm not totally sure where Mark has gone on holiday.
Q 4: Dear Colin, what is the different between sculpture and statue?
►A statue is actually a sculpture. But the difference is:
Sculpture: a form of art carved from wood, or from stone, or build from materials, in any shape or form.
Statue: usually a stone sculpture, nearly aways of a person.
Q 5: 可否讲解下 “such that” 连起来的用法?以及同so that 的区别。谢谢(并非 such …that)eg.But the state of my health is such that a return to Ancelstierre seems prudent, away from this inclement air . Eg. Power such that it was effortless .
► "Such that" is fairly formal English so I would advise you not to worry about it too much. However, of course it is good to identify when you see it in a sentence and understand what it means. It means "in the condition / way that....". It is used as a conjunction when you are stating a situation and you are then saying what this situation causes as a result.
Example: His bad attitude to studying (situation) is such that I know he will fail his exams. (result).
Q 6: Which one is right?“No pain,no gain.” or “No pains,no gains.”?ThX:)
►No pain, no gain is the correct expression.
Q 7 :I'm just quite confused about the expression here: "wake up in one's bed "instead of "wake up in bed" OR "wake up on one's bed"? I'm looking forward to your reply ... many thanks!
►Wake up in bed is more normal. I think that if someone says "wake up in one's bed" they are emphasising that the person slept in their own bed (perhaps for a change), or they are talking in general: Here is an example of how one's can be used for generalisations:
Eg: After a long business trip staying in different hotels all the time, it is really nice to return home and wake up in one's own bed.
Q 8:Hello, could you please tell me if there is any difference between "can" and "will" when both of them are used in predicting. Thank you in advance.
►Can is really an expression of potential or ability, and will is a modal verb used to describe something that is either a prediction or something you're sure will happen in the future. It is better to master the difference between "will" and "going to" future.
Q 9: Could you please tell me if "can "and "will "are exchangeable when both of them are used in making offer, request and describing general truth?
►When used to make an offer they are usually interchangeable. "Will you help me carry this heavy bag?" "Can you help me carry this heavy bag?"
